China plans to create a base ship in the island nation of Seychelles. For Beijing, the bases in the Indian Ocean region is very strategic in supporting the security of merchant ships to or from China that during this vulnerable group of pirates attacked off the coast of Africa.

According to Reuters, China's Ministry of Defense admits that they consider the new plan. If so, the base in the Seychelles is useful as a logistics hub for warships that China's anti-piracy security missions.

"In accordance with the requirements and the need for escort missions other remotely, China will consider the placement of facilities in a number of the appropriate port in the Seychelles and other countries," the Defense Ministry said Monday, as quoted by The China Daily newspaper.

Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie, the beginning of December has been visiting the Seychelles - an archipelago in the Indian Ocean close to the east off the coast of the African continent.

However, China has repeatedly said that they did not intend to build a military base in a foreign country. Plans base in the Seychelles was only considered as a stopover port.

"China will not send troops to protect ships that stop in the Seychelles, so it is not appropriate if called as a military base overseas," said Li Jie, an analyst from China Maritime Studies Institute Military.

Institute for International policy expert at the Institute For Strategic Studies, London, reveals that Chinese vessels have been actively involved in numerous campaigns overseas to fight pirates from Somalia. China had been using the port in Djibouti, Oman, and Yemen to stop logistics.

Chinese warships since the end of 2008 held a number of active anti-piracy operations off the coast of Somalia, East Africa. In early 2010, China had agreed to join the international campaign to protect shipping lanes in the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean to the west.

However, the steps that China has invited the attention of her neighbor, India. Ever at war with China about almost 50 years ago, India troubled by increasingly aggressive Beijing to strengthen its military.
